2019 Election Dates & Deadlines

SPECIAL NOTICE:  The ballot draws for candidate position on Sussex County’s 2019 Primary Election ballots will be held on Fri., April 12.  Municipal Clerks will draw for position of municipal and party county committee seats, whereas the County Clerk will draw for State and County offices. Candidates and members of the public are welcome to attend the draws, which begin promptly at 3 p.m.

April 1: Petition filing deadline (4 p.m.) for the June Primary

April 5: Deadline for objections to partisan candidates’ nominating petitions for the Primary

April 10: Deadline for the Determination of Petition Challenge for the June Primary

April 10: Last day to file Party Declaration Forms to change party affiliation for the June Primary

April 12: Ballot Position Draw (3 p.m.) for the June Primary

April 15: Continuing Political Action Committee first-quarter Campaign Finance Report due in Trenton

May 6: 29-day Pre-Primary Election Campaign Finance Report due in Trenton

May 14: Last day to register to vote for the June Primary

May 21: Deadline for filing of appointments or applications for Challengers with the Sussex County Board of Elections for the Primary

May 24: 11-day Pre-Primary Election Campaign Finance Report due in Trenton

May 28: Last day to apply by mail for a Mail-In Ballot for the June Primary

May 29: Mailing of Sample Ballots for Primary Election

May 31: Challenge to Mail-In Ballots for the Primary Election at the Board of Elections

May 31:  Deadline for application to receive Primary Election Mail-in Ballots by electronic means for qualified overseas civilian and military voters

June 3: Last day to apply in person for a Mail-In Ballot before 3 p.m. at the County Clerk’s Office

June 4: Primary Election Day

June 4: Deadline for Post Office receipt of mail-in ballots from Primary; and deadline for in-person submission of Primary Election mail-in ballots to County Board of Election (by 8 p.m.)

June 4: Petition filing deadline (4 p.m.) for Independent candidates for the General Election

June 6: Deadline for receipt of timely mailed/postmarked mail-in ballots to County Board of Election

June 10: Deadline for objections to Independent candidates’ nominating petitions for the General Election

June 11: Deadline for filing Acceptance of Nomination by successful Primary Election write-in nominee (7 days after election)

June 13: Deadline for Determination of Petition Challenge for Independent petitions for the General Election

June 17:  Canvass of Primary Election Votes by County Clerks (12 days after election)

June 21: Deadline for Recount of the Primary Election, application to be made with Judge of Superior Court

June 24: 20-day Post Primary Election Campaign Finance Report due in Trenton

July 15: Continuing Political Action Committee second-quarter Campaign Finance Report due in Trenton

July 29: Petition filing deadline (4 p.m.) for School Board candidates

Aug. 2: Deadline for objections to School Board candidates’ nominating petitions

Aug. 8: Deadline for Determination of Petition Challenge for School Board petitions

Aug. 12: Ballot Position Draw (3 p.m.) for November General Election and School Board Election

Aug. 16: Last day for municipalities and/or County Governing Body to submit a proposition to appear on the General Election Ballot

Aug. 27: Last day for an Independent candidate and School Board candidate to withdraw from the General Election Ballot (If a candidate withdraws by this date, a new nominating petition naming a replacement can be filed; see Sept. 3 deadline)

Aug. 30: Last day to submit public question proposed by voters and adopted by municipal governing body to be placed on the General Election Ballot

Sept. 3: Petition filing deadline for non-partisan (Faulkner) candidates participating in the November General Election

Sept. 3: Petition filing deadline for a new Nomination Petition to fill a vacancy for an Independent candidate and School Board candidate for the General Election

Sept. 6: Deadline for School Board candidate to withdraw without being able to file a replacement candidate

Sept. 6: Deadline to submit public question by School Board

Sept. 10: Last day for a candidate nominated in the Primary Election to withdraw from the General Election

Sept. 12: Last day to fill a vacancy of Primary Election nominees

Oct. 7: 29-day Pre-General Election and Pre-School Board Election Campaign Finance Report due in Trenton

Oct. 15: Continuing Political Action Committee third-quarter Campaign Finance Report due in Trenton

Oct. 15: Last day to register to vote for the November General Election (County Board of Elections open extended hours for late registration)

Oct. 22: Deadline for filing of appointments or applications for Challengers with the Sussex County Board of Elections for General Election and School Board Election

Oct. 25: 11-day Pre-General Election and Pre-School Board Election Campaign Finance Report due in Trenton

Oct. 29: Last day to apply by mail for a Mail-In Ballot for the November General Election

Nov. 1: Challenge to Mail-In Ballots for the General Election and School Board Election at the Board of Elections
